Overview

The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative in mineral processing involving the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The WCMPF was established in 1990 through generous funding from the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and is currently supported by the newly established Minerals Education Trust Fund. Over the past decade the WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred (500) mineral processing graduates and diplomates. The WCMPF consists of both academics and technical officers at the three tertiary educational institutions whose primary objectives are to:

  • To facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomates for the mineral processing industry.
  • To ensure co-operation, mutual interaction and development between tertiary educational institutions teaching mineral processing in the Western Cape.
  • To rationalise and ensure the optimum use of equipment, facilities and human resources for the education of mineral processing students in the Western Cape.

Staff are primarily responsible for arranging Practical Training and Field Tripsfor mineral processing graduates and dipomates. In addition, Staff are involved in a number of Initiatives aimed at improving the education of mineral processing students, including the design of several Pilot Plants to be used in practical training.
